Eva Cassidy lived and performed in Washington, where her reputation reached almost mythical proportions, but she was relatively unknown elsewhere. It was not until after her death, when her album Songbird was posthumously released, that she became known to the rest of the world, and has now sold over four million copies worldwide. The explanation for her popularity is simple. She possessed a silken soprano voice with a wide and effortless range, unerring pitch and a gift for phrasing that was heart- stoppingly eloquent.
