Following the sell-out season of Voyage in 2018 the Awaken Dance Theatre Company return for another spectacular performance, presenting the highly anticipated show, I AM. at Riverlinks Westside on 23 and 24 March.
Awaken Dance Theatre Company is a newly formed community group comprising of local youth and young adults from the Greater Shepparton region. Performing their new contemporary works in I AM. as part of the Shepparton Festival, 25 young contemporary dancers from across the region telling their story through dance.
The choreography is based on identity through the lenses of our past, present and future as well as the unique journey of finding yourself and your identity. I AM. explores the issues of self-worth and transforming the negative voices from within through contemporary dance, challenging the audience to accept their purpose, culture and belonging.
The performance sees scenes of the natural environment contrasted with the modern, industrial world. This 50 minute performance explores our struggles within the modern world through contemporary dance.
Manager Performing Arts and Conventions at Riverlinks, Ken Cameron says it’s very important to support community groups, such as Awaken Dance Theatre Company.
“The experience and lessons for the region’s youth are invaluable and I think it’s exciting for these groups to have the support to create performances for the local community on a regular basis. It’s a great way to get youth involved in projects they’re passionate about, such as contemporary dance,” said Mr Cameron.
